Scripture: All the people answered, “Let his blood be on us and on our children!” Matthew 27:25 NIV
Observation: The Jews called for Jesus’ crucifixion at their own expense.
Application: Throughout the years I’ve often wondered why bad things, usually very bad things, have happened to one particular ethnic group. The Middle East turmoil not withstanding, it hasn’t really mattered where in the world Jews are found, they usually end up being the local “whipping boys.” I’m not so sure, but I believe that today’s passage in Matthew may hold at least a partial key to, why? When the jealous mob said, “let his blood be on us and on our children,” they may have sealed their fate. I’m not implying that God has cursed them for all time and that he is paying them back for killing Jesus. The Jewish people are his chosen people, period! I am saying that by the mob calling down a curse upon themselves and their descendants they opened the way for all manner of evil people and evil groups of people to abuse and mistreat the nation. I know the Jew’s historical plight goes deeper than one event but I’m sure that the mob’s involvement in Christ’s execution didn’t help their cause. I don’t know–it’s just a thought. I do know this much, if they are God’s chosen people, and they are, then I will support and defend that people and I pity the abusers, throughout history, of that nation!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, I ask that you re-awaken the cause of the Nation of Israel in America once again. As a Christian nation, your people are our people. Make them a priority to each and every one of us. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen
