Scripture: Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope. Romans 5:3,4 NIV
Observation: Paul teaches in Romans of a great progression toward hope.
Application: I don’t know how many times in my life I’ve been frustrated and I’ve cried out to God, “why?”, but I know I’ve asked it often. I believe the answer is found in these verses; to produce perseverance, character and hope in me, that’s why.
Prayer: Father, thank you for caring so much for me that you want me filled with hope. Amen

Very good comments Doug. The next verse also adds much I feel:
…and hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured into our hearts through the Holy Spirit who has been given to us.
