Scripture: I, John, am the one who heard and saw these things. And when I had heard and seen them, I fell down to worship at the feet of the angel who had been showing them to me. But he said to me, “Do not do it! I am a fellow servant with you and with your brothers the prophets and of all who keep the words of this book. Worship God!” Revelation 22:8,9 NIV
Observation: John is shown the New Jerusalem.
Application: The first thought I had when I read these passages was that people never change. We have been chasing after “someone” or “something” bigger than us forever. I believe that it is innate; it’s born into us! Our problem has always been that usually we place our efforts of adoration on everything but God. It even happened to John. I understand that he was over-whelmed with what he had just been shown, but when the angel had finished showing him the glory of the New Jerusalem he fell down to worship him and John had to be reminded where and with whom worship belongs. As the angel said, “worship God!” We must stop focusing our efforts on our looks, our jobs, our country, our political affiliation, our religious symbols, our denomination, our class status, our hobbies, or anything else that is not God the Father and his son Jesus Christ!
Prayer: Father, forgive me if I place my efforts on anything other than you. I know how many distractions are available to me and I know that I can easily lose my ability to focus on you. I’m sorry. I love you and I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen
