Scripture: “It is impossible for those who have once been enlightened, who have tasted the heavenly gift, who have shared in the Holy Spirit, who have tasted the goodness of the word of God and the powers of the coming age, if they fall away, to be brought back to repentance.” Hebrews 6:4-5NIV
Observation: I believe that Paul is saying that if one strays after being saved he cannot regain his lost salvation.
Application: I think that Paul clearly says two separate things here. First, you can fall away into unbelief and stop following the Lord and second, once you fall away you cannot return to the Lord. That sounds pretty harsh. There are those among us that preach “once saved, always saved.” I believe this passage completely rebuffs that thought. I’m not really sure how to deal with this scripture. With what I believe Paul is saying I think that I can only conclude that either you are a fully committed Christian or you are not. However, if you are a strong believer and you leave the faith and forsake your first love, I believe that you will not easily return to Christianity. Paul says you will not return; I believe that your hardened heart and the scales on your eyes will make it improbable and highly unlikely that you will ever follow Christ again. Pray that you never fall away.
Prayer: Father, I pray for those among us who fall away from you. Lord strengthen their resolve to return to you and give them protection through their struggle. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen
