Clean Your Own House

Scripture: Yet Jehu was not careful to keep the law of the Lord, the God of Israel, with all his heart. He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit. 2 Kings 10:31 NIV

Observation: Jehu’s cleansing of Israel has just been completed.

Application: Jehu killed everyone from Ahab’s line, all of his family, friends and followers. By deception and with the promise of bestowing honor, he gathered all of the priests of Baal throughout the country. He had them brought into their temple and then ordered them slaughtered. He burned their temple and crushed their sacred stones. He completely cleaned up everything in Israel that was anathema to God except his own heart. He carried out the physical act of cleansing but never allowed himself to be spiritually cleaned. “He did not turn away from the sins of Jeroboam, which he had caused Israel to commit.” 2 Kings 10:31b NIV Because he didn’t clean his own house his reign was finite. I believe that we should take care to clean our own houses before we point out the failure in others to clean theirs.

Prayer: Father, help me to keep filth out of my life. Help me to be sure that I am not pointing out a speck in another’s eye and ignoring the log in my own. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen
