Scripture: Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. Proverbs 22:6 NIV
Observation: This is probably one of the best known and most often repeated Proverbs.
Application: Sometimes this seems that applying this may be easier said than done. I have a friend that has always said, “show me a bad kid and I’ll show you a bad parent!” I’m not so sure I agree with him in every case. Some of the best people I know, some of the strongest Christians I know, have had trouble with their children. I believe that “if [parents] do not exasperate [their] children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord,” Ephesians 6:4 NIV (paraphrased) and will demonstrate consistency in their own lives there is a greater chance of children staying the course throughout their lives. Obviously, not all children will choose to follow the Lord no matter the efforts of the parents, they eventually have the freedom to choose their course. However, I believe that most certainly if parents do not instruct in the ways of God very few children will ever find and follow the Lord. I not saying it can’t happen, it does, but it is very difficult without a Godly foundation.
Prayer: Father, I don’t know why some children stray and stop following you. I know many wonderful, loving parents that put their hearts and souls into raising their children to know you and when given the opportunity to choose their children choose to leave you. I ask that you comfort those parents and reassure them that their efforts were not for nothing. I further ask that you remove the scales from the eyes of those lost sheep and bring them back into the fold. I ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen
